Saylor’s Creek Prayer

Posted on Friday, April 27, 2018 at 1:11 pm

Oh please my Lord end
this uncivil War
blue is blue and grey is grey
but dead is still dead and all blood is red
remember me on judgement day

the grape arbor grows where the churchyard ends
headstones in a row by the wide river’s bend
there I was washed in his blood n kissed my first love
seems like three lifetimes ago

We ain’t stopped to cook these past three days
no water since morning no pay since last May
It’s a sorry state for certain commissary gives less
shoes, ammo and hardtack than the grace of the dead.
Well I’m a damned good greyhound but barely skin n bone
I ain’t got a dollar or a letter from home
it’s keep yore eye on the skyline, canteen full, powder dry
tonight you got picket n tomorrow may die

Oh please my Lord end
this uncivil war
blue is blue and grey is grey
but dead is still dead and all blood is red
come fer me on judgement day
